Cloud security

Cloud security starts with who can do what

Identity permissions and configuration deserve the same attention as workloads.

A cloud environment can contain strong managed services and still expose data through broad permissions or a public storage configuration. Begin with an inventory of human users, service identities and the resources they can reach.

Review privileged access and recovery. Administrative identities should use appropriate authentication and separate everyday work from elevated tasks. Recovery procedures need protection as well as availability.

Examine service accounts and secrets. Identify owners, rotate credentials where appropriate and prefer narrowly scoped access. Removing an unknown credential without understanding its dependencies can interrupt a critical process.

Check whether logging can answer operational questions. Can the team identify an access change, investigate unusual data access and find the responsible owner? Alerting needs a defined response path.

Finally, test selected changes in a controlled way and record the results. A configuration review is a point-in-time view; ongoing ownership and reassessment keep the work useful.
